Wright Way Wellness
Wright Way Wellness is dedicated to the reunification of families and the support of post-incarcerated individuals as they navigate reentry into society. Our mission is to address the social, emotional, and mental health challenges that often accompany life after incarceration.
Through evidence-based workshops, peer support groups, and family-focused programs, we equip both returning citizens and their loved ones with the tools needed to foster healing, rebuild trust, and strengthen relationships. By focusing on social-emotional conditioning and resilience, we aim to reduce recidivism and empower individuals to thrive as active, contributing members of their communities.
This work is carried out in honor of Malik, a beloved soul gone too soon. Malik lived with Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) and struggled without the language or resources to fully express his needs. Wright Way Wellness exists to ensure others do not have to walk that journey alone. In his memory, we strive to provide hope, healing, and practical support, transforming loss into a lasting legacy of restoration.
Understanding Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS)
Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) is a cluster of emotional, psychological, and social difficulties experienced by individuals after release from prison. Much like post-traumatic stress, it develops from the prolonged stress, trauma, and conditioning of incarceration. For many, the experience of confinement rewires how they see themselves, others, and the world around them.
How It Affects Individuals
Emotional Strain: Many experience depression, anxiety, nightmares, or explosive anger.
Persistent Fear: Daily life outside can feel overwhelming, with hypervigilance and panic in ordinary settings like stores or workplaces.
Social Barriers: Reentering society often brings challenges in forming relationships, trusting others, or reading social cues.
Institutional Habits: Long-term incarceration fosters routines that suppress independent decision-making, creativity, or self-expression.
Disconnection: People may feel “out of sync” with time, culture, or social life, leaving them struggling to find their place.
How It Affects Families
Emotional Distance: Loved ones may feel shut out as returning citizens struggle to communicate or trust.
Strained Relationships: Spouses, children, and parents often face confusion, hurt, or fear as they try to reconnect.
Cycle of Stress: Families may carry the weight of financial burdens, emotional instability, or repeated cycles of incarceration.
Generational Impact: Children especially may experience anxiety, instability, or mistrust, shaping their own social and emotional development.
At Wright Way Wellness, we believe families are central to successful reentry. By naming and addressing PICS, we create safe spaces where individuals and families can heal together, break cycles of trauma, and build lasting foundations for restoration.
