What This Summer at Kamp Selah Taught Us

Another summer at Kamp Selah has come and gone, and as the season winds down, we find ourselves doing what we always encourage our campers to do: pausing to reflect before rushing into what’s next.

This year, we watched kids arrive guarded — arms crossed, eyes down, unsure if this was a place they could trust. And we watched, day by day, as the forest did what it always does. Shoulders relaxed. Laughter got louder. Kids who wouldn’t make eye contact on Monday were leading games by Friday.

That’s not an accident. It’s the whole point.

Trauma-informed care isn’t a slogan we put on a brochure — it’s woven into every part of how Kamp Selah runs. It’s why we build in quiet time alongside the campfires and canoe races. It’s why our counselors are trained to notice the kid sitting at the edge of the group before that child even has to ask for help. It’s why nature is such a central part of what we do: a forest doesn’t ask a child to perform, explain, or justify themselves. It just holds space.

We heard from parents this year who told us their child slept through the night for the first time in months after a week at camp. We heard from a counselor who watched a camper who’d never spoken above a whisper stand up and lead the closing circle on the last day. Small moments. Enormous shifts.

None of this happens without the people who make it possible — our staff, our volunteers, and everyone who has given so that a child’s ability to attend Kamp Selah never depends on their family’s ability to pay. If you’ve supported us this year, this is what your generosity actually built: a week where a kid got to just be a kid.

As we close out this season and start preparing for what’s next, we’re carrying these stories with us — and we’re grateful for every hand that helped build the ground this healing grew from.
